On the occasion of marking the anniversary of allied victory over the Axis forces in World War II, on the African battlefield in battle of El Alamein in October 1942, a memorable ceremony was organized in this Egyptian town on the Mediterranean coast on October 20, 2018 in honor of the killed soldiers of both sides.
The ceremony was attended by a large number of officials of the Arab Republic of Egypt, as well as representatives of a number of diplomatic and consular missions accredited to Cairo, including representatives of the Embassy of the Republic of Serbia in Egypt.
The Battle of El Alamein took place in the second half of October 1942 and was a turning point in the confrontation of the Allies with the Axis forces in the north-african military field in the Second World War. The forces of Erwin Rommel, the celebrated German general were stopped in the breakthrough toward Alexandria and the Suez Canal in the fierce battles defeated and suppressed from Egypt.
By the allied victory near of Al-Alamein, the main British route of supply through the Suez Canal was secured and the penetration of the Axis Force into the Middle East and threatening the left side of the Soviet Russia through the Caucasus was disabled. From the Battle of Al Alamein, Rommel’s forces were continually withdrawing from a North African battlefield (Libya, Tunisia), which ultimately resulted with their capitulation in Tunisia in May 1943.
The ceremony of marking the Battle of Al-Alamein by celebrating the victory over the Axis Powers and giving honor to the death soldiers of both sides is traditionally held every year, bearing in mind its significance in the Second World War.
